I want to switch my filter media in my Bio-Wheel from the disposable filter packs to just a sponge to lower maintenance costs. Will removing the current filter pack and replacing it with a clean sponge cause a mini-cycle and spike my ammonia? Should I shove the sponge in there with the filter pack for a week to age? I have a second sponge in there from an old filter (it is pretty small or I would just use that and not bother with a new sponge). Will that be enough to mature the new sponge on?

you will probably be fine, you do have a bio wheel after all, as long as your tank is matured and all.

Its not very mature. My cycle just showed up today (didn't precycle, didn't know better). I did add about ten pounds of mature gravel to the tank a few days ago which is what kick started the cycle. Should I wait until the cycle is more nearly complete? My plan at the moment is to put the new sponge in there with either the cartridge from the filter or the older sponge. I just can't decide which one.
