crushed coral is often used in either the filter as media or as substrate in a tank to buffer the ph and other parameters.
i've never added crushed coral to my tanks but i would think you would want to add it slowly, a little at a time, so as to not cause large and sudden fluctuations in the various parameters (ph, gh, kh etc.) of the water. hopefully somebody here who has experience using crushed coral will chime in soon.
