I have a 50 gallon tank for a turtle. I am using a H.O.T. magnum filter that works well. I am trying to set up a second filter, also H.O.T. magnum. I cleaned it out, replaced a couple of parts but can't get it to run. It runs for about 5 minutes and starts coughing an sputtering. I suspect it is leaking air somewhere but haven't found any obvious leaks. Any suggestions?

Try putting food safe grease around the joints to check for bubbles. A thick enough layer that you will see the bubble, something like vaseline should work, just be sure you can clean the joint after.

Thanks, that's a great idea! I just kept searching and finally found a cracked outlet pipe. I had an extra so it is running fine now. Next time I will try the grease and it will probably take hours instead of days.
