Hey, just signed in here for the first time about 5 minutes ago and I am really impressed with this site. I recently purchased a 75 gallon tank because my 35 gallon was getting overcrowded (rainbow shark, pleco, 2 botia loachs and a load of hybrid platys that i have been breeding myself). I have always been accustomed to using the H.O.T (hang off top) filters for my aquariums (they seem easiest to maintain) but considering the size of the tank I was informed at my local pet store that a cannister might be a better option. I have friends who have cannisters and H.O.T filters and I get a mixed reaction from both. Anyways long story short, I was looking for some opinions from people as to which type of filter they prefer. Should I spend the big bucks on a cannister filter or should i buy 1 more hang filter and run 2 in my new tank? Thanks in advance.

I use both, sometimes on the same tank. They both have their merits. HOBs are easierto clean, canisters are more efficient, can be quieter. I would keep the HOB filter on there and get a canister - use some sponges for mechanical media in the HOB and stuff the canister full of biomedia.

Here's my two cents. I have a HOB on a 20 and a canister on a 55. I find them both relatively easy to maintain. The canister takes up less space behind the tank...which allowed me to put it closer to the wall. Both are quiet. The HOB tends to get more calcium deposits over time, making it a bit more work over time...
The canister does allow me to load it up with more bio filter medium, but neither tank is overstocked and both seem to be equally "healthy".
I have never owned a canister before this 55. I would do it again. But in reality, they are both good choices.

I use both on larger tanks. I'll be setting up a 40g in the near future, and it will have a XP2 (canister filter) and an AC50 (HOB/HOT). I like having filter redundancy, in case one fails, and the AC is easier to noodle with if I want to add media for a special purpose.

If you have a HOB filter now but think it is not adequate for this size tank you can add a canister filter and run it at the same time as the HOB filter. I like the Eheim canister filters but they do tend to be pricey. Maybe you can find one on sale. Also the xp series filters are a good choice and not as costly.

Thanks

Appreciate the comments, im headed to the pet store now to pick up a cannister and use it alongside my current HOT filter.

Yep...double up with a canister, I prefer Magnum 350 or the new C Series.

if you buy online you can save your self a lot of money. thing with canisters i didnt see anyone say is they have more area for media. thats a big plus for canisters. filters are often over rated. i usually cut the amount in half. so if it says good up to 50 gals i put it on a 25 gal tank. another thing i would run a hob and a canister on that tank. its always good to have a back up just in case something goes down.
