Filter Question?

Is there a certain point in terms of tank size where you can't just add another canister filter or hang on the back filter. Or is there something else out there that you have to invest in to keep everything in your tank clean and healthy. I have heard of sumps would that be something that I would have to consider. Just to give you an idea I am talking of a tank in the size range of about 210 gallons.
