I have a couple of fishtanks; a 100 gal. long with a 350 mag. filter, the other is a 110 gal. with a trickle filter system using bio balls. I eventually want to replace the 350 mag with another filter. it is about 15 yrs. old, and I was just wondering what other people had as their own personal preferances. To me, I am not crazy about the 350 mag. when it comes time for filter maintanance. It is a pain in the --- when it come to putting it back together after cleaning. Lately, I have had trouble with the tubes being air locked. Is there a filter that does as good a job as the 350 mag, but not as much as a pain when it comes to maintanance?

An HOB like the Penguin or Aqua-tack are super easy cleaners but not very effective filters and at the other end the magnum either 350 or 250 and FX5 are my recommendations as super effective cleaners, requiring proper filter and hose cleaning to work properly.

I only clean my magnums and Fx5 every 2 months and hoses every 4 months and see it as worthwhile maintenance for a crystal clear aquarium.

Perhaps a pond sponge submersible might work as I hear they are both effective and easy to clean and replace. I actually had one (Rio 2100) and can confirm this but just don't like the room it takes up inside the tank or the drippy mess when pulled out.

check other recent posts, many by far are fans of AC's aqua clear filters espec. with AC110's

low price points than many hob's & can be more than 1/2 of canisters where u can get 2 & use both AC's in your tank - a novel idea. ease of mainteance & great performance/waterflow.

check www.kensfish.com or www.bigalsonline.com

good luck

For large tanks I opt for a trickle filter every time. For ease of use and maintenance you can't beat them.
I myself prefer my trickle filter over the canister. The tank that has the trickle filter came with it, it was a reef set up, but I put african cichlids instead of salt water fish. Can a tricle filter set up be done on a tank that wasn't designed for it? If so, how?

The only difference between a SW or FW set up in a trickle filter is the salt. However, I find it to cycle faster and stay stable longer if no more than the bottom 1/3 of the bio media is submerged. I find that by keeping the bottom 1/3 submerged that I benefit from the aerobic and anaerobic bacterias greatly. I have tried both fully suspended and fully submerged bio media with the greatest benefit from a partially submerged set up.

I also keep my mechanical filter media fully suspended with it draining down onto the bio media (in my case bio-balls).

i have a 110 gal. with 3 Oscars and i am using a Fluval FX5 and a AC 110 I run both so i can clean one every other month as to not shock my system
but if you only have smaller fish the FX5 by it self would work fine
the FX5 has been a great filter, my tank is in my bedroom and you can not even hear the filters running

just my 2 cents

I haven't had any other canister filters, but I love my Marineland C360. It's on my 75g community tank.

I still say AC110 for superior performance at this price level ($80!!) vs. the more expensive canisters & cumbersome maintenance.
