filter recomendations

I am brand new to this so forgive me if these are simplistic questions

My mother just gave me a bunch of aquarium equipment

I have the hoods heaters all kinds of air pumps and automatic feeders but no working filter

I have a Magnum 350 that seems to have a bad impeller, an over the top type filter with no tubing and two or three under gravel filters plates with no attachments. The most interesting is a Penn Plax undercurrent.

My question is I guess should I attempt to fix the magnum or any of the other filters or just start over with new

I believe that it is a 20 gallon tank that will only have a few fish what filters would you recommend

I'm a starving under employed college student so I can't afford much

I feel your pain, man (or woman).

The Penguin Bio-Wheel 100 or the Aquaclear 20 will cost you less than $20 and are both great filters. I'd personally recommend the Bio-Wheel.

I thought those would be around $100
see my name means something

For that money I think I will just go to PetSmart and start over with new filters and put the Magnum away until next year
 
I would get an Aquaclear 50 from petsmart. I like the AC better because you have more freedom with what stuff you put inside of it (I havent bought anything for them for over a year.....I just keep cleaning the sponge). This is an over powered filter for a 20 but it will allow you to make a few mistakes and have the filter keep up, and it will also allow you to transfer it to a bigger tank in the future.

Make sure that you print the petsmart.com price off of the internet and ask them to price match it......the in store prices are much higher.

Go with an aquaclear. They are relatively inexpensive and run like a champ not to mention that they are also very quiet filters.

Just finished wiith the intiial set up

AC 50 for $25 and I splurged on a bubble wall and 25 lbs of natural gravel I already had a bunch of plastic plants

I cleaned the tank before filling it and setting up the gravel and pump.

It is very cloudy, apparently I didn't wash thr gravle as weel as I thought.

How long before it is cleared up and I can put fish in.

What are some good low maintainance fish

I'm thinking a few koi and some bottom feeders
