Fluval 405. Oh wait you said either magnum or a rena. In that case I'd give the rena xp-3 a try myself. Its really mostly a preference thing though.
Heh - same boat (46 gal bowfront soon) - I'm interested in a planted tank w/ lots of Pristella, Black & maybe Glowlight Tetras (after cycle is complete).
I was thinking Eheim 2213 or 2224.
Also - there's these CA-2000 filters on Ebay pretty cheap - they look just like a 2224 type Eheim. Anyone tried one?
The other setup I'm considering is making a under gravel w/ power heads and adding a Marineland 400 biowheel or something like that.
Also - for a 46, 300W heater should be adequate if PCs don't maintain at least 77°F water?

Hey Squawk, are you saying you can afford an Eheim 2224, but would rather take a chance on a Penn-Plax Cascade filter? At least we know Eheims are from Germany. Penn-Plax doesn't seem to want people to know where there filters are being made. I'm not saying that they are bad, but if you don't want to spend the money on an Eheim then I'd probably give both the Fluval and Rena lines before buying a Penn-Plax. I don't run undergravel filters so I can't comment there. As for a 300 watt heater on your 46g tank it kinda depends. If the night time ambient air temperature is something like 65f then that would be a good bet. If your house doesn't get below 72f or so then a smaller heater would work just as well. You may even want to consider using two 150 watt heaters instead.
Agreed - I've been reading more and more. It's been >20 years since I've shopped around for a canister filter. Not much has changed. Eheim was the best then and is still regarded by many as being the best. The only others still in contention are Mag & Rena XP. It may well come down to what I can get the best deal on. Other things being equal, I'd go Eheim.
I've also revised my heater spec down to 150W or 200W (Ebo-Jager w/o question as I've seen too many tanks killed by anything else).
Now I have to figure out what to use for substrate that will be plant friendly while not totally defeating the purpose of buying an Eheim...

I would skip the magnums as they don't hold as much media. If money is not an object then go Eheim. If it is, go with the XP3
