Filter too powerful?

I've got an opportunity to grab either a used Penn-Plax Cascade 1000 or Cascade 1200, either at a good price. Is there any problem putting the more powerful filter into my tank?

This will be for a 38G (36x12x17) community tank, probably with sand and stocked with an angelfish, rams, cories, school of tetras.

Here's a quick link to some specs on the models:

Are there any concerns with using the flow-rate values to reduce the gph (e.g. harder on the pump motor)? I can't see dimensions, but it looks like the 1200 is mostly just taller. Does anyone have on that they can provide the measurements?

how much structure is in your tank?
if you have a bunch of driftwood it will break up the flow..also you can place deflectors on the output.

I run a 1250 gph pump on my 75 with powerheads in the tank.

I don't see this as a big issue. You can never over filter a tank unless you have a tidal wave going in the tank. In that case then yes it would be too much.
