Filter too strong!

I have a ten gallon tank that I've divided (divider w/ little holes) down the middle and I have a betta in one side and I'm putting my feeder guppies in the other side. I bought a ten gallon hang on filter from ebay and I've put it on the betta side and the water output flow is too strong on that side. So I didn't want to because I'm going to have to buy a baby saver guard but I put it on the other side and it's too strong for little guppies there too. The plants in that side are swaying.

Is there some way to tweak it? Like putting a rough scrubber sponge under the water flow? Any ideas? I found a really good deal and now it's not even any good!
 
I meant the... outtake. Where the water falls out of the filter back into the aquarium.
 
I just read something here that I missed. I'll try it and I think I'll try it over the intake too. But won't that stop a lot of the dirt from being drawn up into the filter?
 
It will act as a prefilter, functioning as a mechanical and bio surface.
 
It definetely will slow things down for the little guys. I think it will also help catch all the fine particulate matter. Just make sure to clean it often enough so you will get enough filtration going through it to filter your tank.

I just take a 20 oz bottle, cut it up so I have a curved surface. Then tape that to the lid of the filter, so the output current hits that curved surface, then goes into teh water. Greatly reduces the turbulence in the tank
