The only thing I replace is old filter floss in canister filters. I don't think I've ever replaced the filter pads in any of the HOBs...unless it was because the filter was used on a sick tank with lots of meds.

Just rinse it out when I remember to.

I just started my Filstar the beginning of April. The sponges don't show any wear yet, so don't plan to replace soon. The white filter pad crapped out a couple of weeks ago, but I started using polyester fiberfill in addition to it, so just increased the amount. The first basket has sponges, and the second has some biostars..and I fill the rest of the basket with polyester fiberfill. It takes a coupld of weeks for that to clog up enough to affect the water return, and then I take everything apart, clean it and pitch the fiberfill and put in new. It's cheap, I use the craft stuff from Walmart.

Same here, rinse my ceramic noodles and replace half the filter floss in my eheim canister once a month.

I guess I'm the odd man out again. I rarely replace any filter media. My mechanical is all sponges, of indefinite lifespan after weekly rinsing. My biofilter media is hard plastic or cramic noodles - both essentially eternal.

Yah RTR, I dont ever change the sponges. But I had a bag of filter floss to use and that stuff just won't come back into it with a little water

I only use it in the 55g ("while supplies last") so it's no big deal. But I definitely see no point in continually replacing filter cartridges that are spongelike or come in most HOBs.

I have three aquaclear sponges and a piece of filter pad in my Penguin.... and some biomax on top. I squeeze out the sponges in the bucket of drained-off tank water when I clean the tanks... so... once a week or so? That is in the goldfish tank.

My two planted tanks are Eclipse 25 gal. I have filter pad and filter floss in the top of those... I replace the floss every couple weeks. The filter pad is changed monthly or as needed. Usually, I just squeeze it out in some tank water and put it back in. The only time I use carbon or ammonia chips is in an emergency or for removing medications and dye at the end of a treatment for sick fish.
