Ok guys I need to know what you all do. When you get a filter do you go for the ones that are made for your size of tank? When I got my HOB aquaclear I got it 'cus it was made for the size of my tank. Is this approach really necessary? It's a very heavily planted tank with CO2 but as long as the surface is agitated, Im alright....righT? I'm asking because I wanted to get a fixture from AHsupply, I dont really seem to have enough room on top. You see my tank doesnt have a cover, its just open....i've got a filter thats rated for a 20gallon wold this suffice for my 40gallon breeder tank?

I aiways shoot for filtering to twice any claims of size capability.

i usually pay no attention to tank size rating(within reason), its usually over-rated and padded for sales..

look at the gph rating, and see what that is. i go for 10x my tank size in turnover rate.

IMO,You are under filtered.....:)

No no I do have the AC70 but I was wondering how Im going to fit a hood over my tank....my sound like a stupid thing to ask!

if you like aquclears, I would put an aquaclear 70 (formerly 300) on a 40 gallon.

I tend to approach filters like this:

take the filter thats recommended by the manufacturer for your tank size, and get the next size up.

thats what I do.

(ps I am also a fan of using multiple filters where possible, for a variety of reasons)

There's no mention of a ac 70 in your post, but that would be a start, whatever the circumstances with your hood choice you will need adequate filtration, on a 40 long another additional filter would be a good idea, maybe 2 ac 70's.....:)

true, but at that point, it might be worth it to consider one AC 110, which is basically two AC70's but less money than two of them..:)

Sure, i was just thinking of one 70 on each end......:dance2:
