Filters run your water through media, biological, chemical, and manual, such as a sponge, carbon, and porous materials where the beneficial bacteria colonize. My tank came with an elite filter that had a black spongy insert and a white packet carbon insert. I wanted a better filter that had more flexability and filtered better, so I bought the aquaclear, which layers media and allows you to put in special kinds in mesh baggies, so there is more flexibility.
