i currently have a whisper power filter 60 on my 55 gallon which has been up to close to 2 months (if not more) now. it seems that the water is not only coming out the areas through the biobag things, but also where the intake comes up i nto the filter, thus some of the water does not get filtered. ive tried to clean the bags a bit by swishing them in some of the tank water while i did a water change, but it hasnt seemed to help too much.

has anyone else had this happen to them? any way to fix it so the water does not also come out the intake area thus being unfiltered?

or should i just go buy one of the biowheel filters?

its recommended you change the filter pads around once a month but im not a baller to be buying filter pads like that so i just rinse mine off also. true, that washing the filter in tank water reserves some of the bio filtration but i find a good cleaning of the filter pad in fresh tap water cleans it much better, and ive never had a problem with my tank having to re-cycle. ive found the best thing to do is get two filters and clean each pad on seperate occasions that way atleast one will keep the bio filtration going.

side note: if you keep up with weekly water changes you dont need to keep carbon in your filter so that would help with the water flow also.

yeah i keep up with weekly water changes, but dont the biobags themselves have the carbon inside? if i got rid of thsoe, there would be nothing to catch the waste that comes through the filter...

I got two of those whisper 60's with my 55g for free--I haven't actually used them on the 55. I have a 2115 eheim and a ac 50 on it. However, I plan on using at least one of them on my 38g. They didn't come with any media--and I looked at the little insert things and they were expesive for the structure things. So I bought filter floss and put that in the two sides. I ran it on the empty 38 and the water went through it nicely--and wasn't able to go through the sides.

im not exactly that familiar with whisper filters and there media, but your probably right about the carbon being already in them. ive read that filters only filter about half of the number they quote you on the box so adding another filter maybe your best bet. i have a penguin 350 (rated for 75g) and a penguin 200(rated for 50 g.) on my 55 g. ive never been a big fan of whisper filters mainly for the reasons youre talking about (filter media, flow rate...).

anyways in your case, how long has your tank been setup? if its fully cycled and has been established for sometime than i would just rinse the filter media in fresh tap water, as the substrate and decor should hold enough bacteria to keep the biofiltration going. if its newly set up (around 5 months or less) than i would just do what your doing cleaning the filter in a seperate bucket of tank water. but like i said adding another filter would be your best bet. (obviosly i recommend penguins, ive never had a problem with them)

Good luck!!!

i just went and bought a penguin 350 power wheel filter for up to 70 gallons for my 55 gallon. to switch it out with my old filter, can i put it on right away and just put some of the biobags with the bacteria on it in the new filter to help get it established, or how should i go about doing that?

the whisper filter i have on now is just not doing a good job filtering the water....the bags look like a pain in the *** to buy and put together with thecarbon and what-not, and the majority of the water is flowing out of the middle overflow instead of through the sides with the bags, so i need to do something soon....

let me know how to switch them out right, please, thanks!
