I'd priced out a 30g tank, and based upon some WONDERFUL suggestions here, ordered a Filstar XP1 from Big Al's. My plan is to use an HOB (Aquaclear) to supplement it.

However ... I just found a sweet 46g bowfront at a good price, and am considering it.

Could I still use the Filstar XP1, as long as I bump up the HOB flow to compensate?

There will still be the two goldfish in the tank ... AFAIK no additions.

i use an aquaclear 500 on my 46g bowfront and it works great.....i wouldnt think that you need much more than that itself.....

What fish do you have in it, tbarblover? Goldfish are waste factories.

Yeah, I've read that about cichlids, though not having owned them myself.

For goldfish, I've read that for whatever tank size you have, double the filter capacity. If your tank is 30g, get one or two filters whose combined flow ratings equal 60g. For a 45g tank, likewise, get filtration for 90g.

I was recommended the canister filter for its excellent water clarity & efficiency.

Never hurts to over-filter, but at the same time, I don't want to grossly over-spend :)
