Filtration Advice

I got rid of the carbon in my canister and replaced it with this. Comes in a pouch and doesn't need replaced as often. I was also told and have seen advice from quite a few that it will make the water column really clean at least from an appearance sake. It does look pretty darn crystal clear.

It does look sparkly and polished. Of course I could just be fooled by the MH shimmer. And no corals yet <pout> My tank only has a few snails and worms in it right now. The 30th of this monthy will mark 5 weeks fallow. ARGHHH, I want my fish back in the tank and I know they want out of QT prison too.

I know...I know...I'm going to a fragging demo this weekend and planning on getting my first piece. A bali green slimer. That is if I can get my vet to prescribe me some Interceptor for a coral dip. He switched my dogs to a different brand and I'm all out of that and I've heard on good authority you can use one pill for the large breeds per 300g of water.

Gilurath, I owe you an apology, I've hijacked your thread. Where are you leaning on the filtration issue and did you find my post in the classified about a possible source for chaeto?

Chemi-pure will work in saltwater, but it contains resins that are not effective in saltwater. Basically you are just using the carbon component. Therefore, ounce for ounce, it isn't as effective as a good carbon (and is more experience). Any good carbon (TLF Hydrocarbon, ESV, Black Diamond, ROX 0.8, etc.) will work as well or better.

Grins,
No worries. We both get to learn. I learn more from hearing about others, and applying that knowledge myself. I used to use the chemi-pure as well, and just did not see the point of running the carbon. I have a hob powerhead filter, that I use for more flow, that I throw carbon in if I need to purify something. My water seems pretty clear to begin with, and I overfeed I am sure, cause I have a bigger clean up crew, and I need the algae growing for my lawnmower blenny, since he is not actively eating the seaweed strips yet.

I am finding I am doing just great with just the bioballs in my canister. I run my macro algae in the main tank, hence looking for cheato, and have no sump or fuge. I am loving it, my params seems stable, I have had no issues. I just need to remember to clean the sponges on the front of my canister more often. I think they caused a little issue, since they were VERY dirty.

I did not see your classified post, I will go check it now.

...but it can be recharged and reused when exhausted, negating the cost factor. I've been using Purigen for about 2 yrs now. Great stuff. The nitrates are zero in my freshwater Cichlid tank. I'll be using it in my Saltwater tank regularly, as well.
