what about trying tetra wisper filters

In freshwater tanks above twenty gallons, I would always recommend the extra startup cost of two canisters. They pay for themselves in the long run, and offer countless advantages.

tetra filters are the worst I've ever tried...just my experience though

If you do go the HOB route I suggest AC's over anything.
