OK, as some of you might be aware, I am planning my first tank (still). A 55 gallon FW with live plants (low-med lighting).

I had originally planned on doing as much DIY as I could to reduce initial costs. With some help from Daudzegier, a few others and a pretty good mechanically inclined imagination, I designed my own filter using PVC tubing and a submersible pump (not nearly the first to do this).

Now, I am having second thoughts on the filtration issue. I dont know why. I just am. Even though I have been assured by more than one individual that this type of filter will work, it still worries me.

So, before I go out and start buying parts, I will ask one more time. What should I do?

I say just buy a complete system. How much will a DIY system cost versus a canister or emperor 400? How much time are you going to waste plus how much more money are going to waste on the little things. An Emperor 400 is $40. You can get a canister for $80. It's something that should last you a very long time. 5+ years no problem. The cost per year is under $10. Plus it's guaranteed to work and has been tested and proven and easy to service.

Finally, how much money will you loose if your DIY system fails and either dumps water all over the place and messes up your house or just kills your fish.

Not worth it in my opinion.

For your size tank, get a good canister. Save the DIY stuff for a huge tank.

Canister all the way! :thm:

Anyone care to recommend a decent "lower budget" canister?

Mag 350s one of the sites have them at 32% off this weekend. $73
