Hello everyone,

I am looking at upgrading to a 65g tank in a couple weeks and was wondering about filtration. I am thinking of using 2 power filters for the tank, but I have heard that you should use canister filters for larger tanks. Would 2 power filters be acceptable along with regular water changes?

There is no such this as "you should use..." because all filters will do the same thing. I have a 72g tank with 2 Emperor 400s and they are great, no complaints at all. I would recommend getting two of the for yor tank also because they they are excellent bio-wheel filters with a huge filter area.(16inches wide) It is a lot of filtration, but remember, there isn't too much filtration.

I too have a 72 Gallon, and I use an Eheim 2026 canister and a Hagen 402 powerhead with quickfilter attachment(gets the tiny bits out). I have had the canister for a year and have never had any problems.

This setup allowed my to set my tank as close to the wall as possible so that my two rambunctious kids do not disturb it. Also the intake and spraybar are not very noticable.

I had a 55 a few years ago with a Penguin(?) biowheel. It was very easy to take care of.

Just read up on them and then make your decision.

the only thing with filters is how much your willing to spend on 1 or 2. I perrsonaly like the hagen Aquaclear. you could probly use 2 400 or 500 models. I went to Bigals online because there a h3ll of a lot cheaper than petco or anywhere else you'll go.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice so far. Does anyone have any experience with the Penquin Bio-Wheel filters? They seem pretty similar to the Emperors (same company), but cost less.

I have used both Penguins and Emperors, and actually prefer the Penguins. Their media baskets are easier to load and they are easier to re-prime after cleaning. Their cartridges are also less expensive. Although they are slightly smaller than the Emperors, two on a 65g should give you plenty of filtration. Depending on what you are planning on keeping in there, of course.

On my own tanks, I have switched over to Aquaclears loaded with nothing but sponges, primarily due to lower power consumption and no cartridge replacement costs, but based on my past experience with them, the Penguin 330's should work fine for you.

I'm running a penguin 125 on my 15 gallon tank right now. I've had it up and running for several months and no problems have occured so far. I've said this many times, but I REALLY like the biowheels, they are a great biofilter. I haven't needed an undergravel filter because of them. So in my experience, they have been great filters. Now, I've been wanting to change over to Emperors, because they allow for more options and flexibiltiy, and keep your water cleaner. One of these options is instead of having to replace rediculousy expensive filter cartridges monthly, you can replace the filter cartridge with an additional media basket (one media basket comes standard) and place whatever media in it you want (ex. sponges, filterfloss, carbon, ect.) allowing for a lower maintainence cost (Which I appreciate :D)

There was a big thread on 'what do you put in your emperor' a little while back....................check it out if you want:

Here's another link on a thread 'opinions on biowheels' which you might find helpful as well...........

I have a penguin 125 on my 10g tank and it is great. And the 2 emps on my big tank are also great. The emps will cost more(to buy and to get cartridges if you want them), but you will have more room for bacteria to grow on them and you will have more filtration.
