Filtration Questions

I've had my 30 gallon setup for about 6 months with no casualties. I am currently setting up a 55 gallon and have some questions about filtration.

What I currently have is an Eco3 Trickle filter that I was told could handle up to 55 gallons (bought off Ebay) and a power filter. I added a "wavemaker" for circulation just because I thought it was sort of neat. I plan on having about 55 lb. live rock as well.

My questions:

1)do I need a protein skimmer? I am planning FOWLR.

2)should I ditch the power filter or leave it in here? I really only put it in because I wanted something to help clear up the water (there's nothing in there but sand at the moment) but then thought that maybe it would be good for increased circulation and because the cartridges have carbon in them.

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks :)

1)Skimming is not neccessary, as long as you have good flow, a good amount of Live Rock, and a sufficient clean-up crew you can get by without one. It also depends on stocking. What do you intend on putting in the tank?

Having a filter is always a good idea.

I don't have any concrete plans for what to stock. The only thing I know I want for sure is a flame angel. Also going in will be my black ocellaris clown. Is 55 lb enough rock? I've heard 1-2# / gallon but it seems like adding too much would take up a lot of swimming room...I'll leave the power filter in.
