Fin rot in peppered cory catfish

I'm not too sure I can do anything else for this little fish, I have very bad luck with catfish. He has a bad case of fin rot. I put him in a "hospital tank" when I noticed him gasping for air at the surface way more than usual. That was about 3 weeks ago? maybe 4? Anywho, I thought that just immaculate water could fix him because that worked for my Betta fish but the catfish got worse. He is now being treated with Maracyn and Maracyn II and has been for weeks. There are no spots of anything anywhere on him and no bloody streaks on the body. He does not have dropsy either. His appetite is great (especially when fed sinking algae pellets). He rarely needs to surface for air. However, he holds his fins clamped and has no energy. The tank has an air bubbler and his tank water is completely changed out daily and is kept pristine.

Any suggestions? Incidentally he is about 3 years old and no other fish in his 4 year old tank is ill.

Thanks

Its not unusual for the fish to keep his fins clamped for awhile and be sluggish after what sounds like an extreme case of illness. Might want to just give him time to recover from being sick and heavily medicated for quite a long period of time.

Hmm. I never thought the medicines could make a fish act so sick. I have read on here that one should treat until one sees fin regrowth. There is absolutely no regrowth on this fish but I am going to stop the meds and see if that helps him.

I have seen fish react poorly to being treated with meds. I think I would stop the treatment as well, but continue with the nice water changes. You have certainly done a lot for him!!

Yes I sure did try but this morning he was dead. I think I am going to ask on the catfish forum how to treat these fish. (I don't understand how there could be no regrowth in all that time.) I tried to stop the meds before and continue with the water changes but whenever I did he'd lose more fin.

AAhhhh...I'm sorry. That really stinks. I don't have specific experience with fin rot, so I am at a loss as well.

Always hate to lose a cory...!

FWIW in future...
I've had reasonable results with sulfa for fin rot in various fish, including corys. Triple Sulfa worked better for me than straight Sulfathiazole, but both worked.

Good addition to your fish medicine cabinet.

With cories, you should use 1/2 the regular dose.
