fin rot

Melafix & Pimafix can be used in addition ot othe meds. Just be careful the meds you add to your main system, won't crash it. I think Melifix alone, should fix your problem. If they get fungused, then add Pimafix.

Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria that is why we use a hospital tank. Get a 10 gallon tank, API Ammolock and Maracyn 2. Use the ammolock to bind up ammonia in the 10 and either an airpump or a filter without carbon to circulate the water. Treat the tank at night before you turn off the lights with both the Maracyn 2 and a capful of ammolock. That way you won't have problems with ammonia and the fish gets proper treatment. Also a bare 10 gallon tank makes dosing very easy. Forget the melafix when you use antibiotics.

Treating now with Maracyn-2. The question I have: how can you tell that you have taken care of the problem? Will it be obvious and the fins show regrowth? Does that take time?

Now that I am treating this, I saw something interesting on the web. My glowlights (maybe 5-6 of 9) only have this issue on their dorsal fins. No sign of issues on tail fins. In reading around the net today, I found several posts that started out, "So I brought home x glowlight tetras a couple of days ago and now they all seem to have fin rot on their dorsal fins...." Are glowlights just THAT nippy? Even though they sort of look like neons, their activity level seems to be much higher. Could the "fin rot" just be tetra social behavior?

Actually, I found this picture that is EXACTLY what mine look like. Ragged, no color differences.

Again - fin rot or nipping?

Quick bump. What do you look for when treating for fin rot? What does regrowth look like? How do you know if treatment is working?
