Finally going LED

Following along...

This has gotten well over my head, lol, despite trying to keep up with what is being said (wiring, drivers, etc). Shows how little I know of the practical side of things vs. biological side. Don't have much to offer as a result. Feels like E & M all over again...

So far I have received the controller and ordered the heatsink and cool blue/natural white/cyan LEDs. I also ordered 4 140mm fans to mount on the heatsink. All that is left is to place an order with RapidLED on the 29th and I will have all the pieces.

So while I am waiting for all the parts to get here I went out and bought a 40" Sony Bravia LED TV. LOL. Thing is awesome. Built in WiFi on this model (NX700) so I can stream netflix movies right on the TV among many other things. It was just too good of a deal to pass up, better then any blackfriday deal I have seen. Got it for $600.

Got everything ordered now.. just waiting for stuff to now show up. I got a few pieces but still waiting on the majority. This project has grown as well. I have now spent over $1000 just on LEDs/drivers/heatsinks because I am also building a LED light for my 29G as well. It was time to replace all 6 T5HO bulbs on my 29G so instead of spending $150 on new bulbs and the continued rising costs of electricity I decided to turn my CurrentUSA 4 bulb fixture into an LED fixture so I will gut it and replace all the insides with LED parts and still use the shell of the fixture. I should be getting all the parts this week to start building.

Still waiting.. and waiting.. ugh.. it sucks when things are shipped and all you can do is wait for them to arrive.

So far I have my Blue, Cyan, and Neutral white LEDs. Still waiting for Royal Blue, Cool white, and Warm whites along with heatsinks, drivers, optics, etc. Also received 100 Bergquist thermal pads from Nanotuner.com for mounting the LEDs. All I got for shipments today was a new "ES" driver for my Vortech MP40w (not sure why I ordered it now, I thought it had more modes on it than my old driver but it seems to be the same) and received some Warner Marine Biopellets to try out.

On a positive note, the Reef Angel controller didn't do exactly what I wished it would have, which is control many PWM channels for LED control. It can only handle 2 channels currently. So I asked the maker of the controller if there was any possibility to add more PWM control channels and he is actually going to try and make an add-on board for me to be able to control an additional 6 channels. No guarantees right now, he is going to play with a few ideas over the weekend to verify it will work, but if it does he will sell it to me so looking forward and crossing my fingers he can do it.

Very interesting project. What will the total cost be when it's all said and done?

Too much.. ;)

So far I am into it $1111 for LEDs and parts and $368 for the new controller, so $1479 total to make and control a 24 LED setup on my 29G and a 48 LED setup on my 75G with high end Cree LEDs. I ordered 2 extra drivers and some other misc parts I probably don't really need that comes out to around $100 worth of extras.
