Quarantine tank ready, everyone happy in the main tank, holiday over...
In the next couple of days I'm going to finish stocking my 25 gal tank :)

I currently have:
2 Cherry Barbs
5 Silver Tipped Tetra
1 male Dwarf Gourami
2 Thick Lipped Gourami

Most of the fish are quite young (tank running with fish just for 3 months), but even considering the full size of my current stock, apparently I still have have about 30 cm of fish to add.

I have a couple of ideas but I'm really keen in getting your opinion.

At the moment I'm leaning toward one of the following 3:
Rainbow shark/red tailed shark/betta (do you think I'll have issues with the dwarf gourami?)

And one of the following 2 groups:
4 panda corydoras/4 zebra or perl danio

What about the "White cloud mountain minnow" or the "congo tetra"? Any experience with these fish? I saw both of those in a LFS and they look really interesting!

I wish I could find some of the rainbow fish in any of my LFS but the chances are slim...

Any other fish you would recommend?

Thanks
Fabio

Hi guys, yesterday I found the Rainbow fish and I could resist, now in my QT I have 2 Boeseman's and 4 Dwarfs :)

Now I've reached the limit of my tank but I'm really tempted to buy a couple more....
My point is that even if I will have about 100 cm of fish at full size, at the moment I just have no more than 45 cm. How long will it take for my fish to double their sizes? I'm sure I'll have a 50 gal tank by that time so what wrong in adding 10/15 more cm now?

Please share your opinion!

I don't think you should add anymore right now, and basically, stocking by measurements is pretty much out the window on reliability. So much more is involved as with aggression and territorial issues...

Hi Bob, thanks for your input.
Well so far I've selected fish that I reckon should go well together, now (2/3 wks) I'd like to add just the panda corydoras (I don't have bottom dweller in my tank), I know this will go out of the tank capacity... but when really? I'm quite keen in getting another 50 gal aquarium sometime later this year, this is why I'm wondering....

first u dont go by the inch per gallon rule and 2nd i think ur already maxed out with what u have PLUS the new rainbows u got... dwarf rainbows is fine but the Boeseman will get pretty big

I read you go by size of tank. My tank area is 80x30 sq cm (about 32x12 sq in) height is 40 cm (16 in), so 80/90 cm (32/36 in) of fish is the recommended max. With my current stock I will eventually have 100 cm of adult fish, the 2 Boeseman's being the biggest of all at 10cm (4 inch) each.
But my question is really this: the total size of my stock at the moment is less than 45 cm, when can I expect my fish to reach their max size?

u dont go by that either....... go by the full grown size of the fish.. like lets say i have a 80 gallon tank ( which i do ) with one devil ( red devvil midas hybred ) and 7 convicts well the devil will get to about 10 inches ( if its a female male will get to a foot or bigger ) and my cons will grow no more then 4 inches thats about 40 inches of fish in the tank PLUS my common pleco so about 50 inches of fish so if we went with the inch per gallo rule then id beable to add 20 inche of fish still BUT that rule is a myth my devil will take care of any new commers to the tank ( like he has before ) and u also have to watch for aggression with any fish u add to... so please just go by the full size of the fish u have...

2 Cherry Barbs- get about 2 inches and add about 4 more
5 Silver Tipped Tetra- gets about 1.5 inches. add maybe 2 more
1 male Dwarf Gourami- gets aabout 2 inches but may fight with the thick groumie.
2 Thick Lipped Gourami- have no idea on size so others have to chim in..

u should be pretty well stocked then if the TL grourami doesnt get above 4 incehs but they will fight with eachother and the dwarf will also fight with the TL G and may end up losing him... so try to stay with one

I agree and disagree with Livebearerfreak. Although he does have great points, your still using the 1" per gallon rule.

Personally, filtration, aggresion, adult size (which includes bioload) and tank size are few of the things that should be considered when talking about stocking. Also, having plants changing things too.

For your 25G, I'd recommend doing something like:
8 Cherry Barbs, 8 Silver Tip Tetras, a school of small corydoras and pick one of the gouramies (either 1 Dwarf Gourami or 1 Thick Lipped Gourami). Having a lot of gouramies in that small of tank could result in fighting.

Your cherry barbs , silver tip tetras and cories don't produce as much bioload as your gouramis (individually) so you're able to house more of the schooling fish.

Also, you didn't mention what type of filtration you have. What type of filter do you have? I recommend AquaClears. I'd get an AC50 or maybe a smaller canister filter. Possibly Eheim 2215.

There's a lot of debate about the 1" per gallon rule, but it's just what it pretends to be, a rule of thumb, not an accurate measurement of how much your tank can handle. There are behavioral issues (aggression, feeding speed, etc), waste production (a 3" pleco will produce more waste than a 4" rainbow), filtration, etc. The best tool I've found so far is AQ Advisor. They do a lot of research, and have spent a lot of time on this forum gaining information from people who actually raise particular fish. The website is http://aqadvisor.com. You can enter in your filtration, Tank size, Current fish, etc. It will recommend water change schedules, etc. You can also play around with it a bit to see if a proposed addition will work. It is just advising, but I've found it pretty good.

just searched TL G and they get up to about 4 inches ( 3.5 aquahobby says ) so either one TL G or one dwarf id do.

yes what is ur filteration system like?
