Hey everybody.

Right now I am blacking out my tank to try to control my massive algal growth, and I need to find some KNO3 ASAP. I can't find a single place that carries Spectracide Stump Remover or Salt Peter (Petre).

I have seen other brands of stump remover, including one by the brand "Grow More" whose product was called "Stump Remover & Potassium Nitrate." However, the ingredients for that product aren't listed, and I am worried about what additives might be in it along with the KNO3.

If anyone has any input about where I can find some KNO3, I would be in your debt. I've tried the yellow pages, and hitting up all the local hardware and gardening stores with no success.

If anyone would be willing to send me any, I would gladly pay for it, as well as shipping, and for your time to go to the post office, etc.

Thanks for your help!!

Salt Peter would be at an old time drug store if it’s what I’m thinking it is. That the stuff women would give to there men so they would “dry up” as I think they called it back then. Good luck.

**edit**
No liked my Salt Peter joke. Oh well I was thinking some on in there late 60’s or older would get a kick out of it. I did check and I have an old drugstore that still has it on the shelf. The box looked like it was about 40 years but it was still there.

Up here in Northern CA, Lowes sells Green Light Stump Remover ($3.97/lb bottle) which is supposed to be pure KN03. Grant's Stump Remover (available at Ace and OSH) is also supposed to be pure KN03, although the Grant's is pelletized, so measuring by volume using Chuck's calculator may be off since the pellets won't compact as much as powder.

Ordering KN03 from Greg Watson is cheaper at $2.17/lb (even with shipping), especially if you're ordering several pounds of other chemicals besides KN03 (like K2SO4).

I've still got to try calling the local hydroponics and animal feed stores to see if they sell these chemicals in bulk.

Meat processing suppliers will carry it as well as any good feed store, We have a lot Of Amish and menonite communities near me, Not sure if there are any in California. And since it is widely used in curing hams, animal feed etc. it is everywhere. I know there are a lot of Cattle farms south and East of LA, it should be around at a very low price. The downside I've found in my area is that you have to buy it 10 #'s at a time minimum, and even though I make my own hams, and use it for some other items, it doesn't get used very quickly. I have never had aquarium plants, so it's use in a tank is new to me.

Bill's suggestions were all excellent and the products he named are all OK for KNO3. We should probably include them in the sticky. Never mind, I just did.
And if you are ordering a few items(even if you're not) Greg Watson's site is very reasonable and a good source.

Bill, thank you SO much!!!

That was the perfect answer. you gave me several brands to search for, as well as an online alternative. Really, thanks.

Len, I will check out the Sticky thread too, and make sure I add those, in case you havent had the chance.

Thanks everyone!
