Finding your own driftwood

Hello all. I am working on plans to aquascape my aquarium. The plans that I have require a piece of driftwood that I probably won't be able to buy. I plan on scouting out the local lakes to see if I can find a piece close to my required dimensions.

What I am wondering is what kinds of things do I need to worry about? Is a simple water boiling good enough to clean it up or are there any chemical cleanings that need to be done? What other dangers do I need to look out for?
 
Thanks. That looks like the kind of info I need. I started scouring the archives using the word driftwood but quickly discovered that like 80% of the post use that word. I figured asking would be quicker! Thanks again for the heads up! Now to go scour our local lakes!
