Hi all, over the last few days one of my finger leathers has changed colour and isn't opening up. There appear to be bits coming off as well. I put it in the tank a week ago along with another on which is doing great (my toadstool is also flourishing). They're under 2x150w MH's and 2x blue T5's. Any ideas please?

is anything touching it like another coral? also what do u add to the aquarium? have u touched it recently? and do hermit crabs ever sit on it? also how is the flow towards it?

Hi mate. There's nothing else touching it as I only have the other finger coral and the toadstool. I haven't touched it since it went in and that was only very briefly to put it in place. I haven't seen any snails or crabs on it. I don't use any additives, only put some liquid coral food in couple of days ago. There is a circulation pump outflow pipe nearby but its not directly in the path of the outflow. Do you think I should try moving it?

Don't think it fluxes that much. Will keep an eye on it. By the photos do you think it's dying?

Is it directly under a halide, IME leathers like medium light, they will try to acclimate to high light but when they can't they will withdraw like that.

Before you get too concerned or make any adjustments, please be aware that leather coral will often behave the way you describe as a way to slough off old skin and generate new. This is part of their growing process.

I have two rather large leathers and every so often the will shrivel up for between four to seven days only to reopen larger and brighter than before.

Just an FYI.

I thought of that but it sounded like it was loseing branches. Or is it just loseing little peices of slime??? Mine slimed for 3 weeks when I first got it and stayed closed the whole time, opened up bigger than at the LFS!!
