Finrot or Tail biter?

Tested water again today and again, no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Maybe it is what you said mel_20_20 because I'm taking out mostly all the water that nothing is showing. I've had the fish in the tank for abit now and Since I've started this thread I've been testing every other day and getting 0 readings for all (except the Ph of course). I cut up one of my nets I had laying around and wrapped that around the filter intake on all 3 of my betta tanks using some thread since I did see my betta in my eclipse 6 get his fins wrapped around the intake, no fin damage occurred though thank goodness. Did a 90% water change as usual. He is still a very active flarer and is still eating good. I believe he even built a bubble nest! First betta I have had ever to do that.

About my test kit expiring. I test my other tanks and they all have readings.

Hang in there and keep up the water changes. He should start to improve. I'm pulling for you and your boy. He's a beauty.

perhaps the reason you are not getting any nitrate readings is because it is one small fish in 3 gallons of water. maybe the ammonia created by the fish is not enough to register??? i had one betta in a ten gallon tank with two small sponge filters running last year for some time and i never had any readings on that tank, ever, and i believe it was from the high level of dilution (small fish, lotsa water, lol).

what you need to do is daily water changes of 100%, no salt, keep the temperature below 78. is the light on the tank flourescent or incandescent? incandescent bulbs bring the temperature of the water up quickly! never ever use incandescent bulbs, especially on a small tank, since small water volume means faster temperature fluctuation.

try for one more week of 100% daily water changes (just net the fish out and put him in a 1 gallon container of old tank water while you do it). use only a good dechlorinator and make sure you don't overdose it. if after a week you don't see any improvement then you go out and buy a product called "Betta Revive". it is a 'cure all' but works well and has methylyne blue and malachite green in it, along with some other ingredients. i had extremely good experiences using this product when i kept bettas. daily 100% water changes are a must when using Betta Revive.

keep us updated!

I believe the light on the tank is an incandescent. It's one of those eclipse tanks so unfortunately it heats the tank up alot but I no longer turn the light on and leave the top off the tank w hen I can. So far I've been able to get it down to 76* but it fluctuates between 76* and 78* and my house is pretty darn cold too! I use only the best of the best dechlorinator that I read was recommended highly on this site, which is Prime.

I will definitely be out to pick up this Betta Revive stuff. Even if I do see improvements and I don't need it, it will always be good to have on hand I suppose.
