Firemouth cichlid

Fish are my hobby and my business, its one of my jobs as a breeder to distribute good accurate information to other hobbyists. I post on here and anwser questions because many people do need help. As far as the water, you would not believe how many people screw around with their water, I figured you were just one of the idiots that did. You also proved yourself to be a jack@$$. If you don't want a diagnosis, which is what telling you if something is normal or not, because if its not you need to do something to help that fish out. Your FM was not acting normal, you screwed up somewhere along the line. Had you acclimated him properly and had "well suited" water params for him, he would have been eating in a few hours. So Mr. Bio major, if you don't want a diagnosis, figure it out yourself. You may sit here and think that all of us are just some "amatuers" sitting around all day on the comp, but your wrong, did you ever stop to think that maybe I have a degree in Bio, or that I am working on one, or that I majored in aquaculture. No, you just took on the typical "higher than thou" additude that is so common in today's college bound people. You will not be a very good biologist if you sit here and ask for advice about whats going on and then throw it back in the face of people who have given you suggestions as to what they think is wrong. And a side note, just because the tank has been up and running for a while does not automatically make the params fine, you can have a sudden biological filter crash, any time, in a matter of hours.

I have spent 10 years keeping fish, watching their behaviors, learning as much as I can about keeping and maintaining them as well as breeding and raising them. I have taken many college courses dealing with the field of Biology, as well as many AP courses in HS dealing with that field. I am by far no expert in all parts of keeping ornemental tropical fish, but cichlids are one that I know, and know **** well. I will continue assuming that people who word things such as you are screwing around with their water in order to attain that mystical pH number, why because most of them do. And most of them do not say so. You obviously do not understand how chemicals effect fish if you did not supply us with your params. You should also not ASSUME that we know you don't want a diagnosis when you post something like you did. You have a lot to learn, especially if you can't anwser that a fish acting like that is not normal behavior.

does adding peat count as screwing around? I do that, but I never waste money on any of that chemical crap like pH low and what not but to lower my pH I have peat and driftwood

Its best to just leave your tap water alone unless your trying to breed fish. Most fish don't need acidic or even close to being acidic water. Nothing provides lasting stable effects to lowering pH outside of using RO water. Peat really will not do much at all to the water unless your water has a low kH, if you have a high kH it will do virtually nothing to change the water.
