Amazing fish. I would love to have those instead of my so-so LFS firemouths. Mine have their moments, and I love them, but to have color like that all the time would be incredible.
I keep them in a 75g and display them in a recently setup 180g soon.
I will be culling them next month and keeping 8 of the best colored specimens. I have promised some out and will let everyone know how many I have left. They are nearing the next breeding phase and will probably start spawning near September.
The key here is the size! Their colors in person rival any breeding dress of the average ADULT firemouth! That means in a display tank with dark backgrounds and dark substrates these fish as adults will be amazing! I am so excited to display them in the new 180g I set up.
Culling Fm's takes forever! You have to understand that these fish wash the color out when stressed bythe net so you can't say "Oh there it is!" They all look the same. So I have to set up a 5g Eclipse and place them in there one at a time for a day or two to see how their true colors are when they are displaying. Then I know if I got the right intensity. So it takes about 2 weeks to go thru the fish properly.
Becuase I am at the latter part of a decade with these each spawn is more and more exciting! You know only 5 or 6 fish out of every 200 will have that WOW!!! effect! I love finding those 5!
Very nice community. Firemouth is relatively small fish and so peaceful that they can be kept with swordtails. It's interesting to watch them pared up and guard their fry in a community.
