Hi,

I am now thinking about putting some firemouths in a 55 gallon tank. I would like to have two pairs, ideally, so I was thinking of maybe adding 6 young ones and then when I have two pairs, removing the non-paired fish.

For companions, I was thinking of odessa barbs or serpae tetras (not both), maybe a dozen? Could I keep more barbs/tetras?

Thanks,

p.s. I had a thread going last week about a 40 long and I am wondering if a 55 would be a better size for my setup.

Thanks again...

Why not go with variatus platys or swordtails for tankmates - they're from the same biotope/area in Central American and provide lots of live food for the firemouths?

i think you will have a problem with two mating pairs, i would go with the odesas or black rubys barbs with rainbows with the firemouths, and maybe a BN pleco for the bottom

zebra danios will probably be better tankmates.

the tetras are to nippy, and the barbs may not be tough enough.
nippy tetras in a tank with firemouths..lol

I kept tiger barbs with bolivian rams..you should have seen what the rams did to the barbs..
I had to move the tigerbarbs..one of the male rams blind sided the barb nearly blew it out of the water.

reminded me of a greatwhite attacking a seal on the surface. ;)

A single pair.
