yes congo tetras are pricey, but they're definitely worth it in the long run. what i do for all my tanks is tape a colored poster-paper, usually black, to the back of my tanks and it looks great! it's up to you though, there's also the option of painting the back of your tank. have always worked for me in tanks with fish that don't nip his tail.
