I've a seasoned reefkeeper, but wanted to try out freshwater.

Here is my first attempt. So that I don't make the sames mistakes any noob makes, I would love some input.

couldn't figure out how to use the youtube button.

Nice tank!

As for the youtube button. I used to know how to use it, but now every time I try it doesnt work. So I use the video button that is 5 over from the youtube button. Just copy and paste the entire url into that and it shows up a bit wider too. (like you actually see on youtube)

ok, so assume I know nothing. someone told me to use excel and/or "root tabs" which I don't know what they are. thoughts?

Flourish Excel is a source of carbon (like CO2). It's not a 'must have' but I do highly recommend it if CO2 isn't being used. It also inhibits algae growth as a side effect. In a tank this small, it's cost is negligible so I'd use it. A 2 liter bottle would last a very long time.

Root tablets will keep heavy root feeders (like swords and crypts) happy...especially if a nutrient rich substrate isn't being used.

I use both in my planted tanks.

I'd recommend dosing everyday but if you miss a day it won't hurt anything. It's no more trouble and takes less time than feeding your fish...especially on a small tank like that. A 1-3ml pipette works well to dose it with.

In that case, do a large water change first then dose the recommended amount of Excel required upon initial use or after water changes...which is 1 capful/5ml per 10g of water, then do the regular daily dosing when you return. (1 capful per 50g of water.)
