Hello,
Built my dream home three years ago and always thought it would be cool to have a large fish tank incorporated into my bar.
After much reading and advice of others to include my local fish store guy.... I choose to go fresh over Saltwater.
My current setup is a 210 gallon reef ready all-glass aquarium with a 55 gallon sump below. The sump houses two heaters, a pump, and my biofilter media.
Inside the aquarium is a dark blue background with white rock substrate. I'm starting out with fake plants. (I'll try and post some pictures)
Started my aquarium venture on December 5th, 2007. Started the tank with 6 danios, 6 gold barbs, and 5 cherry barbs. 3 weeks went by with absolutley no readings of ammonia or nitrite. I have well water so is quite hard with PH readings around 8.0
LFS guy suggesteed more fish because the tank is so large, so we put in 4 columbian tetras, 4 black neon tetra's and 2 thicklipped gouramis. Another week and no readings. So we decided to jump start things with 3 "old" filters from the LFS existing tank.
Things started to take off after that about one week later.... My ammonia spiked to around 1.0 and nitrites around 0.3, so I did a 30% water change, which did not really change my readings, so I did another 30% water change 2 days later.
Today my readings show the ammonia going down to 0.25 and my nitrite still holding around 0.3, so I think the tank is cycling just has taken some time.
My water clarity is crystal clear (took a good month to clear!). So far I have really enjoyed things, and I have only lost one fish during the cycle.
Bryan
