I have a 46gal tank, AC 300 HOB and a Eheim 2227 Wet/Dry filter.

Getting ready to set-up for marine fish for the first time. Probably will start with a few clown fish and some other community friendly species.

I haven't got a clue about protein skimmers, except that one is needed. Any advice? I was hoping to buy one (new or used) from Ebay but there are MANY different skimmers and I could use some advice.

Are UV sterilization lights important?

Any other equiptment that I will need to get started.

UV sterilzers are completely unessisary, and will probably do more harm than good if you want to keep corals at some point in time.

Make sure you get a quarantine tank and use it, if you don't you will have almost no control over disease in the main tank.

I'm using a seaclone skimmer (rated for 200g) on my 29g, inadequete for my particular situation (IMO), but should work if you keep the stocking levels lower than I did.

Sounds like a good setup. You can skip the protein skimmer if you do regular water changes (like weekly). Or, I'd recommend a Coral Life Super Skimmer which comes in a 65g range. Better then SeaClone and easy to use.

UV Sterilizer, special lights, all that are not important for a Fish Only tank. Invest in live rock and sand, if anything. Cycle your tank before you add fish and take your time adding them.

Good luck.

i think the skimmer is going to be one of your most important purchases.
i empty mine almost every day and you wouldn't believe the green/brown stinky stuff that comes out of it. the coralife mentioned above is a good one, also look into the aqua c remora.
