First Post!! CICHLIDS IN 55 GALLON Sorry for all the photos!!!

Aggression issues don't usually ramp up till the fish reach sexual maturity and start pairing off and claiming territories.

Your idea of mixing incompatible species really isn't anything new or cutting edge, most new fishkeepers do it until they learn better.

Lol I was waiting to be trolled on this site I figured it would be sooner. jeta, while I respect your opinion, I'll continue to do it my way. I will not learn better as you phrased it. (very patronizing and condescending, thought we were all friends here) I've had my big Jack for over 3 years, I'm sure sexual maturity has been reached. it was about 8 inches big in a 10 gal tank for months at my lfs until I rescued him. It doesnt claim any particular spot, and is probably my most passive fish I have. The only pair I have are the Johanni's and I probably will move them out for breeding purposes. I also have various species from different lakes but it works for me. besides you are speaking of situations that happen in any Cichlid environment. Incompatible is a relative term. peta as well as many naturalists would probably argue that we shouldn't house any species of fish in any tank. they are incompatible with living in a glass box. I'm not trying to be new or cutting edge. I simply like certain fish. Now if I thought one was being bullied or an issue did arise, Id have my net in there as fast as I could to relocate or rehome the fish.

I know its not recomended. My parms are fine for both, and I have zero Aggression problems with my Jacks. Love them as well as the Cichlids so they will remain in the same tank for now. My 55 gal will be empty in a week if I decide to move them over, but that's probably not going to happen
My oscar (SA) just ate my "electric yellow" two days ago. Dont think it wont happen eventually. Hahaha (I've obviously "learned my lesson" and I'm working on rehoming everyone but my beloved oscar)
They were fine ten minutes before, then he had him in his mouth. Been together since they were tots.

Nice looking fish though I agree with not mixing the africans and american cichlids. It's more than water parameter differences, it's differences in dietary needs and body language. Would hate to see any of your beautiful fish get torn up in a dispute (the EBJD in particular, he's pretty wimpy to be in with that group of fish). Also, most mbuna should not have bloodworms and other high protein foods in their diet as it can contribute to the often deadly malawi bloat. Best to feed them a high veggie diet. The JD on the other hand would do well with bloodworms.

Thanks for the informative feedback. I actually do accommodate all of their dietary needs. handfeeding my ropefish for example. In the future I may move the EBJD to a specimen tank. he is I dunno the second or 3rd largest fish in the tank not counting my pleco so I really havent seen any reason for concern at this point. Im a pretty responsible fish owner, maybe not the elitist, but I will do everything in my power to keep them healthy and happy.

Thanks, I was wondering if you were going to call me a troll for giving you a pretty generalized and common sense opinion.

you are reading into my words. You obviously aren't concerned with advice so I don't know what else you want.

I've had my big Jack for over 3 years, I'm sure sexual maturity has been reached. it was about 8 inches big in a 10 gal tank for months at my lfs until I rescued him. It doesnt claim any particular spot, and is probably my most passive fish I have.
I don't think we should rewrite general rules or advice based on the exception. I have an EBJD that is really passive also but turns into a beast when he decides its time to pair off. So I understand what you are saying.

The only pair I have are the Johanni's and I probably will move them out for breeding purposes. I also have various species from different lakes but it works for me. besides you are speaking of situations that happen in any Cichlid environment. Okay I don't know how a peta reference is relative to this in any way, but yeah, that has nothing to do with putting together several species from very different environments together.

I apologize if you are offended at the reference I made to new fishkeepers, but its the truth. They (myself included at one time) pick the coolest looking fish and throw them all in a tank together, then find out later that these fish all have very different behaviors and preferences. I wasn't trying to say you were a new fishkeeper, just that your idea of mixing all different kinds of fish together really isn't a new one.

I'm glad it works for you, and I didn't have the intention of swaying your opinion on the subject when I posted, because I know you aren't here for that.

jetajockey,
You know what. I do appreciate your advice. As a matter of fact you can check out my other thread where I'm asking nothing but questions. I threw this post up as a new member introducing myself Showing off my fish and trying to interact with active posters on here. I'd like to be a member of an online community that educates and inspires newbies to get addicted to the hobby like I am. I love all animals, I enjoy fishkeeping. I've invested money and I've also done my homework. I knew becoming a member I'd be under the gun for having the mixed cichlids that's why it struck me funny when you posted. I really figured my very first reply would be the same as what you said. just out of curiosity what tank mates do you have with your EBJD? the Peta reference was very relative. the point is people are gonna disagree. People are going to say what you do is wrong or cruel. I was saying there are people out there right now that disagree with the idea that you even own an aquarium. to same people taking an animal out of its natural habitat is just wrong. You didn't offend me, not in the slightest. as a matter of fact if down the road either of my jacks up and devour one of my fish I would contact you first telling you I had no idea what I was doing and I should have listened. For now it does work. It works really well actually. you sound like a bright guy. I'd love your opinion on things in the future but as far as my mixed Cichlids go for now it is what it is. If I had the wall space Id have each jack in its own tank and nothing but Cichlids in the 125. Thanks for the reply. Point taken

I keep my ebjd in a 40b with a female jd and about a hundred fry at the moment. I'll probably keep him in there till I figure out whether he is with a BGJD or not.

I apologize for coming off like a youknowwhat earlier. I read this thread along with a few others and kinda merged them all together, so my bad.

I really don't advocate mixing all of these different species together but it's not the end of the world or anything. I keep alot of different fish species but only a few of them are aggressive types because it really limits what I can mix. If I was dealing with just a few tanks though I'm sure i'd be more adventurous in it, but I try to stay more community oriented in general.

Hey Man No hard feelings,
If you are shipping those EBJD's you may wanna pm Stoneyredneck when they are ready. I know he is looking but hasn't had much luck with juveniles. I got mine between 3-4 inches and haven't had a problem. you got any pics/video of your set-ups. Id love to check them out
