First Post...Couple of Questions

My wife an I just got back from the store with some fake plants and some decor for the 10g tank. All I had in there was gravel, and the gouramis would flip out every time you walk in the room. They are awfully shy. Are they all like that?
Hrm, I've only had 3 gouramis, so I can't speak for all, but none of mine have ever been shy. Then again, my tanks have all be either heavily planted or full of hiding places.

Even some skittish fish, like silver dollars, will come out if there are enough places to hide. The hiding places make them feel secure and thus they can give in to their curiousity and come out into the open. They know they have someplace close by to run to if they get scared.

daveedka, I did go back to the store where I got the loaches, and go figure, they were all gone. This was maybe two days after I got them, and they had a bunch of them. So, either they all died or got sold. I am positive this is where the ich came from, as the two I got were completely covered in it the very next morning.
Next time something like this happens to me -- happened before I knew about quarrantine tanks et al -- I'm going to bag the fish up and take it right back to the FS. Dead or no, I'm taking it back. If its something like ich or anything else that they should have known was in the tank, then the fur is gonna fly.

Wanna sell me a sick fish? Don't you quarrantine YOUR fish before you put them in the tanks? Fine, then YOU pay for the meds and salts in the quarrantine tank. You can cover MY costs for the disease YOUR fish was carrying.

Oh yah. Boxing gloves. No more bs from places like Petco and Petsmart. Dunno what kinda results I'll get but dammit, I'm gonna make with the tsunami waves.

hi, it has been my experience that in a perfectly healthy tank, thier is usually ich present: However, unless somesort of stressfull situation occures the ich seems to lay dormant (even for years), then something like a water change with to cool water, lowers the fishes resistance and whamo, you have ich. I am surprised you were not able to control with quickcure, I personally have never had that happen. As far as to the reason your gourami's to not come down with it, could be they just never got stressed out enough to allow the ich to gain a foot hold.

Just for clarification, ich does not have a dormant stage, nor is it in all water. These are both extremely common myths that can easily be disproven. Ich hides in a tank active via it's normal life cycle. These myths are unfortunately rampant, and far too many people believe them without questioning them. You can kill ich and you can prevent it's re-introduction into a tank.
