Okay well, I've been keeping saltwater for a while, no freshwater, but I've been looking around and I like the fish selection, and I'm wanting to change pace a bit, so I thought I might give a freshwater planted tank a try. Now this is my very first planted tank that I'll be attempting, now they way I here it, I can get florescent or single bulbs to put in the hood of the tank(depending on what type of hood it is). I believe I read and they are called "grow bulbs", and that these would take care of the lighting, gotta use fertilizer, like liquid fertilizer. And I have to make sure the water conditions are suited to the plant. This is gonna sound kind of lame but, I would like to start with some of those bulbs that you can get at Walmart and you put them in and they grow. The reason being is I want to get some practice in. Also you guys are gonna have to teach me the right way to prune the plants. I know this is alot of questions but I would really appreciate the help and I'll probably be around here asking tons of questions, but these are what these websites are for. Thank You.

Can't help you much since I'm just starting out myself. But I started with those bulbs in a 2 gallon with an air stone and no light/ferts. They sprouted in a few weeks. I moved them to my other tanks and they are doing fine. I have standard lighting, don't use ferts (though I'm a little overstocked) and have sand for substrate.

I say try the bulbs. If you like them you can always get more/different kinds of plants later.

I have some bulbs growing no ferts, normal flourescent bulbs. Seem to be doing ok. Bought them at walmart.

They are only 1/4 the way up the tank yet so don't have to prune.
