do find a new home for the pleco. hes already getting quite large for the 55 at 7"+. if you do want to keep a pleco (though not that one, there are a lot of smaller species that are fun) you might want to look into hardy plants like anubias and java moss and hornwort. easy to keep and hard for the pleco to destroy. btw, most plecos destroy things by being clumsy, not because they are necessarily eating the vegitation (there are ones that do eat plants, but most wont)
