Fish appearing from nowhere

I was walking around the yard today, and noticed a lot of movement in a drying up mud puddle. I go check it out and see a lot of critters, so being a nice lady go grab my biggest fish net and a bucket and start scooping up stuff. Most went over to my duck pond, but I noticed a lot of fish in there. They weren't mosqito fish, or any other common type of wild fish around here. Plus the puddle they were in is just that, a puddle, not connected to anything. How can a fish appear from nowhere?

I'd have no idea about that but that's pretty interesting. What's in your area? It's almost like
killifish that pop up after a drought...but this wasn't connected to anything...odd. I bet they're happy
in you pond:)

I live in south mississippi. Have lived here for wayyy too many years, and have fished in the ditches along the road since I was a kid. I was thinking a killi also, but can't imagine where they came from. Looked at one up close, they all are very small, around 1/2 an inch, so are either babies or stay tiny. They almost look like those least killis, but different, I will try to get a pic up. Just hope the ducks don't care for sushi, lol.

That's pretty cool, hope you can get some pix up too. I'm sure we'd all like to check them out.
Well here in Brooklyn NY that's one thing we don't see in puddles...cigarette butts other garbage yes...fish no.

There is a fish native to Europe known for this, in the genus Leuciscus that is sometimes called "The Motherless Fish", that lays sticky eggs on the stalks of reeds. The eggs are known to brush off onto waterfowl, be transported by air express to another body of water and hatch there. Btw where are you located? Pics would be nice but probably not very helpful unless you have a a cam capable of taking some really good macro shots.

Didn't see you were from MS.

Interested to find this out. Watching for updates. ;)

How do fish colonise any new body of water? They can't, in the main, swim down rivers, through the sea, and up another river. Certainly it's not unusual for them to be transported on wildfowl, from one water system to another through flooding, and by being dropped by predators.

I have put a few into a clear container with fresh water. Am waiting till they get used to it, they seem a bit stressed. I feel really bad now about the fish that are captured in the wild now. If these fish are so stressed by what I have done, which I tried to be very careful, imagine how stressed they are to being caught in a net dumped in a bag, flown to the airport for gosh knows how long for QT, then flown across the ocean to us,, where the're rebagged and shipped off to us. These fish do not seem to have sexual differences like livebearers, so am thinking they are probably egglayers. If so, leaves me to wonder if the eggs NEED to be dried out before hatching? I am not very good at raising egglayers, so they will most likely be a one time wonder. Will try for pics later.
