Fish are dieing!! :(

I've been testing every other day for the last 2 weeks, the nitrates are still that stupid red orange that you can't tell which it is. They lowered in my 29 gallon betta tank to 20, but they won't in the 55 gallon. If plants are turning partially yellow and roots are brown, does that mean they are dieing?

Oh something I did do different, I put some fertilizers in the water, could that be it?

The inhabitants of your tank arnt a problem ( I have quite the odd selection of fish in my 75 lol)-------side note: is your HUGE ADF a ADF or is it a African clawed frog commonly sold as ADF as babies? The new fish might have carried something into your tank that current tank mates were more susceptible to for some reason. Maybe you fed spoiled food? The fish that you added are not trouble makers in that environment and the only harm they would be doing in terms of affecting tank mates would be disease. How did these fish die? did they act funny or give any indication of poor health?

What fertilizers and how much?

as well as the ADF/ACF possibility i was also unsure of the petricolas and maybe there's too many male gouramis in there or the stock might be just a bit on the high side or stocked too fast. variables i either don't know or may not be the person to ask, etc..

I'm gonna do a 60% water change, then retest the water, then answer the questions.

from what ive read( bar in mind im still new to this but ive done alot of research in the last month) nitrates at 40 can be a real issue, and can kill fish. not all fish respond to nitrates the same way. also distibution of nitrates may be variable in a tank if it has any dead spots. i always water change frequently. and yes exces fertillizer/food causes nitrates to rise. it all depends on how much you are dosing. also yello plants are usually not a good sign. unless the plant is naturally yellow. Qt is another possible issue. however i think nitrates are the cause, just keep up on water changes and keep the ferts down for now.

nitrates at 80ppm are not going to kill a guppy, period. the other fish seem doubtful to me at those ranges as well.
