Fish at Walmart

biogirl: That's how I felt a couple months ago, buying all my supplies online and stopping by the only decent lfs in the area for fish and plants. But now I work there, so I can buy things online and not feel bad about not supporting my LFS ;)

Well ya know, I can't say I won't buy another fish from Wallmart. I know its bad, but if you know what your're looking at, and you know how to keep it, and its healthy, and the price is right...why not? The fish will keep on coming, unless walmart stops selling. The best you can do is complain when you see things that are'nt right. Dead fish, dirty water etc...If your fish die, bring them back. If they get enough complaints, they'll at least be aware of public pressure to improve, if not stop selling totally.

The LFS has other animals, and I'm sorry, but $499 for a Cocka-poo is a pretty healthy profit margin. Hello, it's a mixed breed... We paid way less than that for a thoroughbred with a great pedigree.

Your comment was probably totally unrelated, but for clarification... My comment was on Pet *chains*, that sell small animals- not dogs and kitties. 'Cause you're darn right that's a healthy profit margin! I despise pet stores that sell puppies and kittens- I tolerate the ones that sell small animals because I have to.

I also took a trip to Wally World today. No more Endlers in with the guppies. :( (Sad because now I'm wondering where I'm going to get them!) Their feeder guppies had a small PILE of dead fishies in the bottom. Worst I've ever seen. I was able to get my filter for $10 like AFG said (yay!), but still can't find a test kit. *sigh* WM's fish looked somewhat sickly, but alot better than the ones at the local pet shop I also visited today.

Rava,

Yes, I probably did misinterpret your comment. I though you were referring to puppies and kittens as well as birds, ferrets, rats, etc...

Our Wal*Mart stores sell the Jungle brand 5 test strips (bottle of 25) for about 11 dollars.

The pet store that sells puppies for outrageous prices also had some of the most awesome-looking Bettas in there today... I had never seen one that was pink, lavender, and purple. And a blue one that looks like he's plugged in or something! He now lives in our 55gal... :-)

One thing to mention: It seems that most WalMarts and chain pet stores have a bad reputation, which I think this is mostly deserved. But, occasionally you find a WalMart or a Petsmart that does have decent live fish. The Walmart in my area is horrible for live fish, but the (very limited) ammount of fish supplies that they have are very inexpensive. The petsmart in my area actually has a few knowledgeable clerks, and they keep their tanks fairly well for a chain store. I go to Petsmart fairly often, and I rarely see dead fish in the tanks. They have a huge bank of stock tanks with common filtration, so I guess they are just asking to have problems. All in all, I'm happier with Petsmart than a couple of the dedicated Fish stores in my area.

Wally World

every time i got to wally world i take a look at the fish and no one can pay me to buy fish there!!!!!! there fish are horrible because every wally world i go to, they cant sell fish b/c they are being treated for ich and i asked a clerk about it and she said she dumps the medicine in the resivore to get all the tanks and they share one big filter much like a central heating and air conditioner works in your home and not to metion the amount of deads in the tank so they do not care about the fish so dont buy them, but i buy the supplies there but i live in a large county that has only one petstore in operation because they cant stay in buisness so a rule of the thumb buy fish from a store that has a pretty good knowledable staff and they quarantine new arrivals.

I wish I could remember who it was, If its YOU take the credit. I read today someone "rescued" fish from wal-mart. I assume it was a purchase, but the term used struck a chord.

I work at meijers, we get something like 3/5 credit for all dead fish we write off, so when you write-off more then you actually have die (which all places do) you come out positive.

In superstores like meijer or wal-mart high profit departments carry the low profit departments. So even though you loose money in some dept.s you get more shoppers due to the "one stop shop" aspect, so you some out with more money than you would without the low profit departments.

my local walmart is not so good in the fish dept. to many dead fish, but i'm considering buying one of those 29g kits, that comes with everything at 99.99, elswere there go for 109.99

now my local petsmart is awsome, many young "petsmart" employees, love them. they take there time with me and let me know what i don't need as well as what i need. never have i felt i had to buy something before i left. the the prices are a bit lower than two private own stores.

My local Wal Mart does not sell fish. (Thank God!) Their largest tank is the 10 gal kit in a box, no stands. Very limited supplies and merchandise. I occasionally cruise by to see if anyone's wiped the dust off stuff (low turnover, I think). Imagine my shock to see an ammonia test kit from Aquarium Pharm. !! I snatched it up! I'll probably never see one again there, but it was a great deal.
I do all my shopping either online (if I have time to wait for it to arrive), or at my locally owned LFS, which has knowledgeable staff and they look after their fish well. They just have too high of prices, unfortunately.
