Just like the others, the only way to know is to go there and look. Believe it or not, up until 6 months ago, a local wal-mart(no, that is not a typo) was the best place around to buy fish. It was not the only place with fish, but they hired and older gentelmen and his only job was to take care of the fish. They were the best dang fishes around. Unfortunately, he became ill, and was unable to care for the fish, so it went to cr@p, mostly because nobody took care of it. Other than that wal-mart, the only other place that I buy fish is 45 min away, and she is the closest. She only has a small shop(~20 10 gal, 5 20 gal, and a 55 gal), but she always has a very good variety of excellent fish. If she doesn't have something, she will get it. She now carries red cherry shrimp, because I asked for them(she keeps them in stock, and is selling out within 3 days of getting her new stock in). Sorry for the rant....I'm bored

In my area we have a very limited selection. I usually go to petsmart because our wal-mart is horrible. Bunch of high school kids who don't care appear to be running there tanks. Every time we go in there are at least 10 dead fish being eaten on by the others. Very sad actually.

when i first went to our petsmart i was kinda suprised to see a 17 y/o girl with a ton of makeup running the fish area... but she turned out to know a ton about the stuff, and the fish all look very well cared for.

about 4 yrs ago i got 12 exodons for 1.49 each, because the person working there was a new guy, and didnt know much.

Where I live there is only 1 pet shop in the county and is called Bert's Pet Center and all of there fish are healthy and you just need to know what you are buying when choosing a healthy fish.

My local Petco has nice fish, but not much variety. The PetsMart is ok, and the Walmart is terrible. It all depends on the individual store. I don't think that you can blanket label a chain across the country because the people who manage them vary a lot.

My experience has shown that most large chain stores are ok. There is a fish specialty store around here that jacks the prices up alot on everything and the fish arent in a great condition, not bad just not worth the price. There is another local nonchain petstore which ocassionally has good deals but neglects its animals. I might be a little bias, since i do work there, but I think that the petsmart here is one of the better stores in the area, or atleast i try to make it be. We do have some pretty knowledgable employees, most with years in the hobby and 4 or more tanks. We dont get the greatest variety in but not bad prices on anything though sometimes our distributor sends us some pretty unhealthy fish. Its not always the fault of the individual store if the fish are unhealthy. We recently got a shipment in and the water temp was in the 50s-60s, just because the weather was so cold. Most of the more sensitive fish were dead on arrival but some survived. Petco has a better variety of live bearers and a few other species we dont carry but we carry some they dont. We just have more tanks so more room for different species, otherwise the two stores are about the same in the fish department.
