Fish Day From Hell

I've just had a thought too. If you've done a lot of water changes and basically diluted the Excel to a minimum, couldn't you add a stack of anacharis back in. It would help deal with ammonia. Almost like doing a silent cycle but not quite silent.

My goldfish tank is getting a brand new filter cartridge tommorow. The old cartridge is going into this tank after I get the ammonia down to 1 ppm or less. I've also put bio-spira in. Roan just remember this nasty email you send them will be read by an employee of seachem and not neccessarily the owners or the people responsible for the problem. Heck I could have been the one who notified them of the error and now they will start the process of fixing it and recalling it. I don't know.

Seems like I read a post saying that the directions on a 2L were for the 4L a few months back. Might have been on another forum though.

Actually I'm going to look and if I find it I'll link it up.

Yep, I'll be nice at first. What usually happens is that I send an email and a regular tech mails me back. After I explain to them in great detail what it is I want or what the problem is, they get someone else to actually deal with the problem/question. That's the one I'm going to tap-dance on :D

I haven't sent the email yet. I'm going to write it up when I have more time. We're heading out to Tropical Fish World in MD so I can chew the fat with the owner about rainbowfish, grab some otos, and possibly a couple more clown loaches.

If you go to http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/index.php at the bottom of the forum are threads for each specific sponser,Seachem being one of them. From some of the threads I've read it looks like an actual rep from these companies will answer your posts.

Its actually a very good site for plant/fert info as thats the main subject. Being a newbie I don't know thats its accurate though it sounds good.

Another Seachem Email

An overdose of Excel will deplete oxygen. Your fish could go to the
surface but the bacteria could not. This is the reason behind the
loss of bacteria.

To help the fish out you can add some ordinary rock salt (not table
salt). This will prevent nitrite poisoning, the biggest killer in
freshwater. You can add up to 1 teaspoon per gallon for the fish
although this will be detrimental to the plants. Most plants can
tolerate 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons.

Ammonia is not that toxic to freshwater, depending on the pH. If
your pH is 7.0 or below the ammonia is nontoxic. If your pH is at
8.2 only 5% of what you are reading on the other test kit is toxic.

I packed a box for you but Fedex came before I got the label printed.
So it will go on Monday.

Well here is the mechanism and instructions from them on how I can deal with the pending Nitrite Spike.

Well I went and bought another packet of bio-spira. This time the 90 gallon one since the other packet was probably bad. I did another big waterchange and dumped in this packet. The nice part is that the bio-spira came in yesterday from marineland and was nice and cold when I bought it. Soon after the waterchange my fish started acting better and look a lot beter. I will test tonight to see if the bio-spira is working.

Well to give you an update.

My ammonia this morning tested so high that the color in the test kit turned blue instead of green. Curious as to why I decided to do a major spring cleaning of the tank. I opened up my filters (I had decided not to clean them in the hope that any surviving bacteria would recover) and found out why two packs of bio-spira and 8 days of waterchanges did not give me any improvements.

MY FILTER WENT ANAEROBIC

The putrid hydrogen sulfide smell filled the air. I spent over 3 hours cleaning each filter and all the intake and output lines throughly. I also scrubbed down the biofilter pads (to kill the anerobic bacteria and remove the sulfide precipitates). I am now on my way to get 6 oz of bio-spira and try again to restart the biofilter. Seachem was not lying when they said that excel lowers dissolved oxygen content. What happened is the anerobic bacteria released sulfides in the water. These sulfides killed the nitrifying bacteria crashing the tank. Since they were still building up and being released in the unclean filters, the biofiltration could never be started up. Lets hope that changes now.

Its a miracle that I have not lost a single fish. As for the goldfish, you barely notice that they were injured. They healed up incredibly fast.
