Has anyone seen a listing that shows where different types of fish generally prefer to be in the tank in terms of depth? I guess I am kind of looking for a fish breed that likes to be near the mid to upper levels of the tank. I have corys, a pleco and pictus cats right now and they all tend to work the bottom most of the time. Id kind of like something I can actually see in the tank once in a while and isn’t hidden in my drift wood or plants all day!

Not a listing, but I can tell you that in my tank, my rasboras (heteromorpha) must have taking a ruler and figured out the exact midpoint and stay within 1 mm of that midpoint unless they feed. (Okay - exaggeration!) If you are looking for a small, pretty fish, constantly in motion through the middle of the tank, my vote would be rasbora heteromorpha. They also stay in a school more than any other fish I've had.

My platies work the whole tank, but mostly stay in the middle - defintely can see them. Another choice.

Depending on your tank size, I'd highly recommend giant danios. I had overlooked these fish for years, but absolutely love the school of 10 that I have now. They leave my gentle fish alone and rarely visit the bottom (only then to steal some food, as they're voracious little pigs). They remain around mid-level in the water column and are in perpetual motion. They're also quite bold, i don't know if I could scare them into hiding if I tried.
