Fish died, one dying...feel like a failure

I was changing only 10-20% a week, and my Nitrates shot up like crazy.

my pH is also 7.8 and ive got angels, corydoras, black skirts, dwarf gouramis and plenty of other fish that like lower pH, not in the same tank mind you, and they are as happy and can be

pH level is fine, don't tamper with it.

50% water changes weekly is fine, good job at keeping the nitrates very low.

I think you have the right idea, leave the tank as is and watch the current inhabitants for anymore sign of health issues. QT immediately if it does and once things settle down, QT any newcomers for a month before introducing them to the maintank.

I do 10-20% almost every day in a heavily planted tank with allegedly "touchy" fish (discus, rams, neons, a farlowella cat, and spectacular werneri rainbows) and my fish are very happy (rams in breeding color, rainbows in constant show-off mode, discus acting like regular fish instead of frail divas). It sounds like a hassle to do on a daily basis, but it only takes a few minutes. I treat my tapwater only with Prime, no other conditioners or buffers; but I do add several supplements for the plants (iron, trace elements, etc.). I had a scare the last time I did a 50% change (maybe my H2O was a bit "off" that day), but the fish seemed really stressed for several hours, so I figured that I'd rather stick with higher frequency/lower percentage changes.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I had decided to euthanize the poor danio, but he was already gone when I got home this afternoon.

So, now I'll wait and watch. Really, the people on this forum are awesome, and I really appreciate all the advice.
