Hehe, I have sucked up corys before. I usually notice while they are still in the large tube area and have time to let them out.
Gersheff planting a tank is a subject unto itself really. I would suggest asking in the plants forum for better info especially since this post is getting kinda long. Lighting will be a determining factor into whether or not you should try plants. Low tech plant set ups aren't bad at all IMHO and fish do enjoy having live plants around. What I would do in your case would be to find one or two pieces of driftwood that would fit into your tank without taking up too much room and building around them. A tank with Java ferns and crypts will generally look pretty decent.
