hi everybody! im in the stage where im "picking" the fish for my aquarium.

being an aquarium n00b, i was looking for your opinions on a hardy fish that would go good in a 150 gal. tank?

my wife's thinkin goldfish, but im open to any sorts of fish

Well, pretty much anything really. I may get flamed for saying something wrong, but what about an oscar? Dogs of the aquaria world they say, lots of personality. OR a knifefish, they're kinda neat. Usually the best way of doing this is you go to a pet store or liveaquaria.com and tell us what you like and we'll tell about them. You could fit pretty much anything in there.

I wouldn't go with goldfish, they get huge and produce ALOT of waste.

seriously, not trying to flame you but, 150 isnt very big dependin on who you talk to, and tho it can fit many different kinds of fish, their are a lot youll want to stay away from that are commonly sold. and goldfish would be fine but coldwater fish are boring imo since there isnt nearly as many choices as tropical. an oscar would definetly be cool, along with a couple other big sa cichlids, maybe a knifefish(not a clown knife tho) or some cool catfish. giving us rough ideas is a good idea.

Well I meant within reason. Huge fish aren't normally that common in LFS'.

Personally I like the community tank, with lots of schooling fish. The nice thing about going with cichlids or other larger fish is they have more personality. Like neonmadness, I went with an amazon theme, but I have angelfish and schools of tetras. Stay away from Pacu's. They grow really big, really fast. So my advice is pick a theme you like, and go from there.

good luck

actually there are several tropical fish that can push the parameters of a 150

Pacus come to mind, oscars, jaguar cichlids(managuense),chocolatecichlid jack dempsy cichlid butticoferi , red devils.many catfish to include Gibby(sailfin) many shovel nosed cats and the list goes on.

you could add some of these save the pacu those need really big tanks

You would be amazed at how many common tropical fish actually get huge if cared for properly. Go to Monsterfishkeepers.com. They deal almost exclusively in large tanks and fish.
For example: A 150 is not big enough for a Clown knife wich has the potential to get 3 feet in length. in a 150 it wouldnt be able to turn around.

You know what... I actually think a 150 Goldfish tank would bve AWESOME!! Bet you didn't know that most anywhere you find a full grown Oranda is selling for 75-200.00 .. Plus you need no heater :) Huge plus when dealing with larger tanks ...

Angels would do excellent in there as well !!! :)You could have a bundle of them.. With some Keyhole cichlids and some loaches!!! Oh wait that was my wifes plan :)...
I'd get a Knive before a Pacu though.. Cause at three feet your Pacu would be much worse off than a Knife... Though I like Pacu..

Though I am a large fish keeper and I love My large meat eaters :) Mainly Sa and CA fish are my Favs.. and Not just Cichlids ... They are colorful but I love American fish Period!!

There is a world of combinations open to you what is your preference.. ??

But anyway I'll stop rambling :)

i'd go with oscars, jags and maybe a dempsey, they have pretty good personalities, dempseys are somewhat shy though..

there are lots of choices..you could get about 8 discus, and a nice school of neons, with cory cats for the bottom

or you could get angels, with schools of rummynose tetras or cardinal tetras, and again, the corys for the bottom..

or you could go with cichlids that dont get huge, like firemouths, kribensis, jewels..or a nice african cichlid tank
