Fish...for a fish-only setup

Hello all, so this is my first atempt at the saltwater aquarium. I have kept african cichlids for years but now want something different. I am setting up a fish-only 75g and was wondering if certain fish do better than others in a fish-only setup...any stocking suggestions are welcomed and appreciated
 
Welcome to Aquaria Central! You will find wealths of info here! Congrats on getting into saltwater. Now I am assuming you are going to do a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) as live rock is the natural filter of the ocean and fish just do a lot better with it there. So you can do just about any fish that you like. How about you list what fish you like and then we can help you narrow it down. A really good book to get is the Marine Fishes 500+ Essential-to-know Aquarium Species by Scott W. Michael. Anyway hope this helps and good luck!
 
Yes I plan on doing a FOWLR and I was thinking about doing 3 yellow tangs, 3 clownfish and then maybe 1 or 2 larger fish(unsure what kind)...How does this sound?
 
To be honest pretty bad. The tangs will try to kill each other in a tank that small settle for 1 after you get your water parameters stabel. You might be able to do a pair of clowns if you can find a couple of juveniles . Not sure about the larger fish either it's probably better to go with a couple of more smaller ones in your first tank. Not only is their care easier but, you can get more fish in there.
What's your set up like ?
 
Well my setup is somewhat nonexistant right now all I have is the remainders of my cichlid setup...which are...xp3 canister which I may or may not use, maxi-jet 900 powerhead, zoo-med 100gph powerhead, heater, oh i do have 60lbs of aragonite and a pail of salt mix...so what i'm thinking is to use the 2 powerheads add a skimmer plus aboud 60lbs of liverock, eventually I want to have the skimmer plus 3 better powerheads for water movement, plus a powercompact light about 300-400w and thats it. so how does this sound? As far as the original topic of fish selection i'm pretty much open to suggestions. I can deal with aggresion problems(african cichlids aren't nice) so i'm all ears.
 
Ok, no problem happy to help you. If you use the cannister run it empty it'll just catch trash out of you water column and causeIn a more issues than it solves for you long term. The live rock will do most of your filtration/denitrification in your tank. You'll need about 1 to 1.5 lbs per gallon depending on if you go for fish,fish/inverts or a reef. If you've ever treated the tank with a copper based med set up a fowlr ,"fish only live rock tank", because copper is highly toxic to inverts even in small doses.
The light should be good enough for fish what kind of bulbs do you have in the hood? That should be enough power for you to grow most corals etc.
This is one of the best parts of the hobby happy dreaming :)

thank you for the replies, well its seems as though maybe I should put some more though,time,money into my setup rather then start thinking about fish options...perhaps i'll start a new thread about a setup.
