Hi,:dance2:
I have had a 200g tank for the past 2 years and in it lived a very nice barcoo grunter, who has since gotten another tank, but now im left with an empty 200g could anyone perhaps tell me a few species of cichlids that would go nicely in this tank together, im also planning on planting it.
any imformation would be great.
Thanks
Andru :dance2:

alot of larger cichlids will rip up plants so be carful with that or you could spend alot of money on plants but you might like Oscars they like lots of room and Texas cichlids are kool along with Green Terrors, Jack Dempseys, or you might like african cichlids better but those are all nice fish

Hey,
Thanks for your input, yeah i really like american cichlids, i would really like an all american cichlid tank.

I'm sure a couple Oscars would be very happy in that tank, bue wary of mixing them in with tougher fish like Green Terrors and Jacks. Blue Rams are nice looking and interesting, but only get to 3" and might be oscar food in the long run. I would suggest researching some of the larger cichlids and see what you can get in there. I know if I had a tank that big I'd set up an oscar tank, but its up to you.

What kind of filtration do you have?

Hey,
Yes i really like oscars, but have never had one, hmmmmm i may research them  . At the moment im replacing my filtration equipment, all im currently running are 2 power heads to keep circulation. could anyoen suggest a good filtration system for this tank?
Thanks

If you plan on getting oscars, you want to ahead and overkill the filtration. Maybe 2 FilStar Xp3 (each rated for 175 gallons) at either end of the tank, I'm sure some of the people with larger tanks can chime in on this one.

ahhh... a 200g
One word, Arowana
They will not mess up the plants that you are going to put in the tank because they swim up at the top of the water, they are a predator so if you choose to put feeders in there you get the experience of watching a fish who has survived longer than what humans have been alive doing there thing. It is amazing. Also they can be fed pellets freeze dried krill etc. you need to be sure to have a top that is WELL SECURED. To go with your arowana you should look into a member of the polyperus family. They are addctive but will not mess with your plants much either. I would hold off on those though until the plants are well rooted and such but thats pretty much common sense. there is a world of possibilities for a tank of that size. Believe it or not, there is a world outside of cichlids, explore it

DOH! Totaly forgot about an Arowana :duh:

Don't confine yourself to just cichlids, go ahead and research anything that might fit in the tank. Oscars are just one suggestion. I'm pretty sure a freshwater Barracuda (which I think is really brackish) would fit in there, I know some people who would just put in a massive school of neons and small tetras :bday:

Don't write off African lake cichlids alltogether, I hear they are very intersting to keep, and intelligent as well.

Freshwater barcudas are not at all real baracuda. They just look like them so they are given the name. They actually are rather docile just like to eat... Kinda like the arowana. With larger fish no matter if if the cichlids you are talking about or arowana, if something can fit in its mouth... its a no go. that does not necesarily mean they are aggresive its just the like to eat. Im sure you've all seen lion king or heard the song circle of life lol. Anyway to continue selling you the arowana... It is not aggresive at all and it is the most graceful fish to watch cruzing the surface of the water and than to see everything else get out of its way because clearly it is the higher power of the aquarium. When it hunts it will swim past its prey multiple times until the prey feels safe and when they least expect it WHAMO! its goen. Sometimes its really funny and will coil up to snap at its prey. The fish truly is amazing and I will be back later to continue trying to convince you if you can get ahold of one get a black aro if not silver will do I like silver a lot
